Um, okay, stretching the truth a touch but….
Earlier this year I received an email from a follower of these hallowed pages who had tied up a few Bob’s Olives (pictured below) and had some striking success.
Well, Geoff has contacted me again to tell me details of the fishery he regularly visits in Wales, and to let me know of the continued success he’s been having with the fly. In Geoff’s own words “On a recent trip I had five fish in seven cast using your fly. over a period of many months I have given many away to other anglers and now Bobs olive is very popular in Wales”
To say I was chuffed is an understatement! I’m really glad someone has taken the time to use my pattern to tie up some flies, and even better that it’s catching plenty of fish!
I invented it over 10 years ago for a specific stillwater in North Yorkshire, but it has caught fish (rainbows and browns) at plenty more rivers and lakes. Not long after inventing it, I actually sent it into some ‘invent a fly’ competition in Trout Fisherman magazine and it was featured on a double page spread, winning me a set of Stonefly flytying tools! This baby was always destined for fame 🙂
Seriously though, big thanks to Geoff for taking the time to contact me. The fishery in question is http://www.garnffrwdflyfishing.co.uk/the-trout-fishery (Stu – how the chuff do I make this a proper hyperlink?!)
I’ve never been but if I do go, I’ll be taking some Bob’s Olives by the sound of things.
It’s always good to hear from people who browse the site. I’m aware that you cannot currently leave comments direct through the blog, it’s some kind of known software issue but Stu has promised me he’s gonna fix it when he gets time. In the meantime just drop me an email to thebobwalker@yahoo.co.uk
Tight lines!
