Annual Fishing holiday

Just a brief update. Been back almost 2 weeks from our annual week in Scotland. The weather was averaging 11 or 12 degrees which is pretty bad even for a Highland summer but we still had a cracking do.  I will, naturally, be writing a big ol’ blog post about it but be prepared for some shocking developments….

I am just back from an 18 day trip hiking, camping and fishing in the wilds of Assynt between Ledmore Junction and Lochinver including 2 nights in the Suileag Bothy to dry myself and clothing out after a tumble crossing a stream when i slipped on a rock !
Hundreds of trout but unseasonally cooler than i would have expected in late june with little fly life.
Hope that Gairloch was kind to you

    Hi Tony

That sounds awesome, apart from the falling in bit! Did you see many other anglers? Gairloch was great but yeah, cold.

Only met one other angler whilst hiking towards Lochinver to buy some more supplies.
He was on his way to fish the loch that i was camped at about 2 miles NE of Glencanisp lodge.
In 18 days he was the only angler that i met….pressure on the fishing up there must be increasing as i usually meet nobody !
I am back up there on 29th july until 1st september

I was up June 7th for a week staying in a friends croft north of Achmelvich but coldest week I can remember in 40 years. caught a surprising amount of fish over a 1lb though which was unexpected as I did not manage my usual bigger trout lochs. Had a walking friend who was fishing for first time and would not listen to any advice so hiking up 2 hours to lochs in the cloud was not suitable. Only met 2 anglers- on Fionn both spinning around loch but I rose four fish while they had nothing but they would have more chance of the Ferox if only they knew where they are. saw a monster on the loch with disability access which I fished from the shore (not recommended as heather issues). all change next year as booking lodge as fisherman moving out of Scourie hotel due to issues. looking forward to blog + just back from Iceland 53 fish in 8.5 days average 45cm awesome but extreme conditions cold, flies, wind,no curtains, ran out of beer etc cheers G

Thanks Graham, sounds like you’ve had an eventful year! What’s going on with Scourie then? Your Iceland trip sounds incredible although no beer or curtains is pretty catastrophic!!
