NB – We have not visited this fishery, this information is taken from the Felling Fly Fishing Club who control access to Thornton Steward
OPENING DATES
The fishery is open all year round for members and for the general public from 1st March until 30th November.
This fishery was operated by Yorkshire Water on a Day Ticket basis for a number years and they ceased fishing operations in 2001. A number of keen local anglers were upset about losing their fishing when Yorkshire Water decided they would no longer run the fishery. Felling Fly Fishing Club were on the lookout for a Stillwater and were able to negotiate a lease from Yorkshire Water and started operating the fishery from 2002. The fishery is fished by members and as part of the agreement with Yorkshire Water we also offer day tickets to the general public. Our stocking policy is to stock with average fish in the 2lb region with additional stockings throughout the year with larger fish in the 3lb to 6lb size. Like all still water fisheries, and Thornton Steward is no exception, they all suffer from the “Dog Days Of Summer”. To try and alleviate this problem for the members and general public alike, Felling Fly Fishing Club took the decision in 2009 to increase its stocking policy througout the summer with fish in the region of 1.25 and 1.5lbs. We are pleased to say that this policy has assisted both the members and the general public.
Day Tickets:- May be purchased from the following four outlets and may be purchased in advance,

The concessionary rate is available to all anglers in receipt of the State Retirement Pension or Disablement Pension and to anglers aged 16 and 17 years. The latter is in keeping with the clubs policy of enabling young people who are still at school to go fishing at a reasonable rate.
At the end of April myself and nine other members of Swale Ure & Nidd branch of Salmon & Trout Ass. held our annual Junior training day at Thornton Steward thanks to the generosity of Felling Flyfishers.
Despite abysmal weather 17 boys and girls had a fantastic day ably tutored by Jeff Metcalfe and assisted by we members. In total 15 fish were landed (one youngster had 5) the largest – 2lb 8oz was caught by Tom Hutchinson and the youngster who showed the most improvement and promise was Jake Chappell.
We hope to have a similar day next year, so if anyone would like their children to learn the art of flyfishing watch this space. Again many thenks to Felling Flyfishers.
Regards Daff.
how far from bedale itself anyone?
Apprx 4 Miles take the Masham road from Bedale
Hi Chris,
I suppose it’s about five or six miles from Bedale, I don’t get the chance to fish it (apart from teaching the youngsters as I don’t drive any more, and no buses go there, but it is a cracking fishery
I’m new in the area and started fly fishing again since my dad passed and I drive from riipon there so if you fancy a day out or a evening just let me know I will pick you up as it’s always better to fish with someone I think anyways thanks
Once again the Swale, Ure and Nidd Branch of the Salmon & Trout Association held their popular Junior Training Day on 26th April. The weather was wet and windy but 17 youngsters heroically fished all day, and although they only caught 3 fish they all enjoyed themselves. Many thanks to the Felling Fly Fishers. We hope to run the day again in 2015, and anyone wishing to partake should contact Dr. Colin Clark-Monks by email to :- trainingdays@hotmail.co.uk
That is not the correct contact number for 2014. I rang up and the person said they don’t know why this number is displayed.
Thanks, I have removed the phone number and updated the info
